"The reason we chose an office in Indonesia, as [Indonesian] President [Joko] Widodo said in Hannover, is because of Indonesia's vision to become the 10th largest economy in the world," he said. In particular, Jakarta was chosen as the location for the branch office in Indonesia due to the availability of qualified human resources, as well as the fact that Jakarta was nearby the various industries served by ifm electronic. In the industrial world, ifm electronics has various industry specialties, such as the food and beverage industry, automotive, mobile machines, water, logistics, ports, mining, and many more. In Indonesia, ifm would focus more on the food and beverage industry as well as the automotive industry. The latter was considered potentially lucrative due to the large size of the market. "We see Indonesia as a big and potential market," explained Jhon Afri Cryman, National Sales Manager of PT ifm electronic Indonesia. We hope that the qualifications of technicians in Indonesia are on par with the qualifications of other technicians abroad," said Sarah Bruehl, Senior Manager of Organizational, HR, Sales Processes ifm electronic gmbh. Sarah added that ifm electronic also opens opportunities for young talents to grow and develop together. Held at Sawan Vocational High School 1 (SMKN 1 Sawan) located in Buleleng Regency in Bali, some 25 students from SMKN 1 Sawan were deemed eligible to be included in the program. Following a stringent selection process, which narrowed the list further to 15 students, 11 sophomores were eventually chosen to be interviewed by their prospective employers – and partners of the GDVET in Hotel Management program – Holiway Garden Resort & Spa, Cili Emas Oceanside Resort and Desa Saya Eco Luxury Resort & Spa. By the end of this process, 10 students were selected for the two-year pilot program, in the course of which these students will spend 60% of the time working as interns at the hotels that chose them as part of their practical training. The remaining 40% will be spent studying the theoretical aspect at SMKN 1 Sawan. When the students graduate, they will have received invaluable real-life experience of working in the hotel industry, as well as a certificate as proof of their European-standard knowledge of the hospitality sector. Hermann Sattler, manager at Holiway Garden & Spa, said the selected students showed promise and that he would, should the students perform well at their task, offer them a permanent contract to work at his property. However, he added that he was also happy to be able to give the students better opportunities to work in other hotels in Bali or abroad. “In fact, I offered to teach them the German language because many of the students we interviewed expressed interest in working abroad,” he added. Mr. Maulandiki Dani, Senior Executive and Supervisor of the GDVET in Hotel Management Program at EKONID, hoped that by the end of the program, EKONID would have helped create world-class workers that can grow the hospitality industry. “We also hope to have provided significant advantages and opportunities for these students in honing their craft further here or even abroad,” he said. Additionally, EKONID also completed the exam phase of the training-of-trainers for the teachers of SMKN 1 Sawan and for staff members of the partner hotels. This aspect of the program ensures that the students receive proper guidance as interns for the hotels, whilst providing teachers and the hotels’ staff members valuable teaching tools to use in the future.

The program, which is being done in cooperation with Holiway Garden Resort & Spa, Cili Emas Oceanside Resort, Desa Saya Eco Luxury Resort & Spa, and Vocational High School (SMK) 1 Sawan, Bali, will see the provision of German-certified and European standard of hospitality and operations training for the students and staff members of the participating partners. “The German Dual Vocational Education & Training Program has a robust curriculum and certification that is recognized globally. Through this program, we can ensure that there is a link and match between the needs of the global hospitality industry and the technical competency of Indonesian workers, as well as to provide opportunities for Indonesian students to work anywhere in the world,” said Mr. Maulandiki Dani, Senior Executive and Supervisor of the GDVET in Hotel Management Program at EKONID. At the time of this report, the program itself is running through the initial process of integrating the GDVET curriculum with the state-run curriculum for vocational education in the hospitality industry. Prior to this process, EKONID organized an Ausbildung der Ausbilder (AdA) or Training of Trainers with the four previously mentioned partners to ensure that the combined curriculum would meet the intended goal. “The GDVET program is unique in that we implement a-40 percent and 60 percent theoretical and practical training respectively in the curriculum. This would not be possible without the cooperation of our partners. There is no doubt of the effectiveness of this curriculum in creating skilled, competent workers for any industry,” Mr. Maulandiki added. Following the integration into the curriculum, a rigorous selection process would be done for eligible students from SMK 1 Sawan. The eligible students would then take part in the theoretical side of the curriculum at SMK 1 Sawan, as well as in an internship part with the partnering hotels Holiway Garden Resort & Spa, Cili Emas Oceanside Resort, and Desa Saya Eco Luxury Resort & Spa for the full two-year period of the program. I Made Rasta, headmaster at SMK 1 Sawan, said EKONID already has a proven track record in the implementation of GDVET in industrial mechanics. He expressed hope that this latest GDVET program in hospitality would achieve the same level of success and continuity. “As a school, it is our duty to meet the needs of the market. This is the bridge that our students need,” said Mr. Rasta. Hermann Sattler, manager at Holiway Garden & Spa, said the program would allow hotels more time to turn prospective students into skilled staff members and hotel managers. “The dual system is a higher quality education. This will help grow the market and it will help hotels to obtain qualified staff members,” he said. Nicole Wöhrmann, owner and founder of Cili Emas & Desa Saya, said the program would be highly beneficial for North Bali which, unlike the southern part of the island, does not have easy access to very many international hospitality education programs or certifications. “It’s going to be good for the guest, for the hotel, and for the students,” she said. ---------------------------------------------- Background: Established in 1972, with a German-Indonesian business community root that go as far back as 1924, The German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry and Commerce (91大神 Indonesia or EKONID) acts as a strategic interface between the German and Indonesian economy.
